Eleanor Roosevelt said that you should do one thing every day that scares you. The problem? Scary things are, well, scary. But being a risk-taker isn’t about being fearless. It’s about facing your fears. It’s about finding the things that you’re afraid of and taking them down, one by one. And if you need a little confidence boost, try putting on a new outfit! (Just like how if you want to get active, you put on a Snikwah!)
You’ve more than likely heard the saying, “Dress for the job you want.” The whole meaning behind the phrase implies that, by dressing a certain way, you’re more likely to achieve what you want. So, if it works for getting your dream job, why not try dressing for the risk you want to take? Could being a windsurfer really be as easy as putting on a surf shirt and hitting the waves?
According to Karen Pine, author of Mind What You Wear, it is definitely a step in the right direction. Clothing can significantly alter your mood and enhance your self-confidence, giving you the change of attitude that you need to tackle any challenge you might face. To test this idea, Pine gave a new definition to “performance wear” by having students put on Superman t-shirts to see if they felt more heroic. Not only did the students feel more confident than students in plain t-shirts, but it even made them think they were physically stronger, reporting that they could lift larger weights.
“When wearing a Superman t-shirt,” Pine said, “the students rated themselves as more likable and superior to other students.”
So if all it takes is the right outfit, why not get out there and try something new? Put on some scuba gear, sail out into the ocean, and dive in! (With a guide or a scuba buddy, of course!) You have it in you to take a risk, you just need to help yourself feel like you can. And when you do, the possibilities for adventure are endless! With a new look and a positive attitude, you don’t have to be fearless – you can look it. And here at Snikwah, we want you to feel confident, comfortable, and protected. That way you can do all the rest.
